Bio:

Steinar Aadnekvam is one of the most active and most talked about young and upcoming guitarists on the Scandinavian jazz scene. Born in Bergen, Norway in 1984, a son of travelling parents, he had the fortunes and misfortunes of growing up in many places throughout Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy and Luxembourg. After studies at Södra Latin music college in Stockholm he enters, at 18, the Bachelor Jazz studies at the Royal College of Music, also in Stockholm, where he stays for 2 years.

In 2005, driven by a restless need to look elsewhere for further growth, he comes in contact with Indian Bansuri master, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, and is invited to his Brindavan Gurukul in Mumbay, where he lives and studies for some time. For family reasons he returns to Sweden, but soon fate takes him to North-Eastern Brazil, eventually a great influence and inspiration. He is a frequent returning visitor to the region ever since.

Professionally, he is a sought after guitarist and in growing demand as an artist, a jazz-songwriter and album producer. He has to this date toured as a leader in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Poland, Latvia, Switzerland, Spain and Brazil.
Nominated for the prestigious “Young Nordic Guitarist 2009” award and Finalist in the equally prestigeous Norsk Jazzintro 2010 - Steinar Aadnekvam launched his label “Music Makes You Happy” with his debut release as a leader “Simple Things” (MMYH / Plugged) that recieved widespread, international praise.

He continues his work in 2011 with the release of his second album "Steinar Aadnekvam presents; from Pernambuco - Brasil: ABACAXEIRO". All in accordance with the label manifesto: “Music Makes You Happy” is more than a record label. It is a motto. It sums up what we all know. Music is essential to our happiness, to understand who we are, to percieve what we can do. Each on our own, in search of our soul. Music, if we really listen, takes us there.

Some Reviews:

"MMYH Records is a record label that requires an explanation.
Music Makes You Happy is what the acronym stands for. And it is absolutely right with this CD. Steinar Aadnekvam is a young Norwegian man living in Stockholm and he is a master of the guitar, the Spanish guitar, that is. He is a virtuoso on his guitar, but he is not trying to shine - his fellow musicians are given plenty of space, which shows a strength to put the music first.
The guitar jazz CD of the year, without a doubt. A great new guitarist has presented himself."
- Lennart Götesson / Dalademokraten (Sweden)

You absolutely need to be blind not to recognize the virtuous talent of this young Norwegian jazz guitarist Steinar Aadnekvam. The twelve tracks on his debut album ‘Simple Things’ are Latin inspired and groovy jazz instrumentals that will provide you with an hour of in-depth relaxation and very enjoyable music.”
- Rootstime.be (Belgium)

Steinar Aadnekvvam (26) plays acoustic guitar with playful fingers on this debut disc, and has similarities with guitarists such as McLaughlin and Di Meola - with a large surplus on the technique. Much inspiration is taken from the Brazilian music and contemporary jazz, and hits the best in the hectic opening track, "Song from the treetops."  A presentation of a talented  guitarist, proving that he is a musician to be reckoned with in the future .
- Stephen Miedell / Bergens Tidende / Aftenposten (Norway)

Compelling guitar lines from Steinar Aadnekvam – a player who mostly handles acoustic here, but works in this warm mode that has lots of nice 70s touches too – an airy, atmospheric space that still finds plenty of room to groove, even in a gentle way – a bit like Pat Metheny on ECM , with all the light and color such a reference might imply – even though Steinar's overall sound is quite different! As with some of Metheny's best, there's a bubbling undercurrent on some of the best tracks – almost a trace of Brazilian jazz – thanks to rhythms from Jonatan Guzman on piano, Petter Eldh on bass, and Anders Olsson on drums and percussion.
- Dusty Groove America (USA)

That norwegian guitarist Steinar Aadnekvam has
studied with Andreas Oberg and celebrates Paco de Lucia in his own 'Troubled Dogs' is clearly heard on a debut album full of Latin and Groove jazz deftly played on acoustic, nylon stringed guitar. Together with a tight piano trio (Guzman / Eldh / Anders Olsson) the 26-year-old guitarist does a tricky balancing act to show width without producing a fragmented impression. He switches from soft, commercial bossa in Jobim's "Photograph" to the nervier, club-inspired rhythms of "Song From The Tree Tops". Originals such as the devilishly catchy waltz "Diabolo en musica" blends with occasional standards such as "Skylark" - rarely enough in a very successful up-tempo version.
- Hallandsposten (Sweden)

February / March, 2010:  Residing in Nazaré Da Mata, Pernambuco, at the old Sugarcane plantation Engenho Santa Fé, studying and composing, and continuing the spiritual growth that Pernambuco offers those who seek through closeness with nature, the animals, the forest, the history, the culture and in the midst of all - the human condition.

January, 2010:  Travelling to Rio De Janeiro for two weeks, recording an album with Swedish singer, Matilda Bĺdagĺrd and the band "A Casa Toca". The recording is engineerd by the wonderful Rodrigo Castro Lopes, of Chico Buarque's "Carioca" album among other things, and is recorded at Tenda Da Raposa Studios in the heights of Santa Teresa. A beautiful location offering, in addition to excellent recording facilities, some quite spectacular views of the city!

Returning to Recife at the end of the Month, it is time for my friend, drummer Tito Silva to go back home to Portugal. The go-away party in the garden turns into an all-night jam that is even filmed. The part where Mr. Erasto Vasconcelos stops by can be seen here:
